Who is Karl Malone?

You may have heard Karl Malone’s many businesses referred to as “Malone Land” around the city of Ruston, LA.1 Or you may know him best as “The Mailman” (a nickname derived from his basketball career) because he always delivered on the court. But no matter the nickname or his involvement within the community, Karl Malone has made a name for himself with his esteemed basketball career and many business endeavors.
Karl Malone had a passion for just about anything that piqued his interest growing up, but ultimately, he pursued a career in basketball. A power forward for the Utah Jazz, Malone became a two-time Gold medalist, two-time League MVP, 11-time All-NBA First Team and three-time All-Defensive First Team and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. He finished third in all-time career points (36,928), only out-performed by Lebron James (first) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (second).2 Karl Malone performed well on the court, but what he really enjoyed and excelled at during his basketball career was being a businessman.
Still involved today with business ventures obtained during his basketball career, Karl Malone dove deep into growing his business portfolio. He currently runs several businesses and development properties in the automotive industry (new and used car dealerships and powersports), commercial development properties (a 37-acre outdoor mall), restaurants (Teriyaki Grill and two Burger King franchises), a gas station (Texaco/Arby’s), a 230-acre cattle ranch known as Malone Outfitters (where he is a licensed hunting guide) and three Jiffy Lube franchises. He also owns two condos at the Green Valley Resort in St. George.1
Karl Malone started the Karl Malone Auto Group in Draper, UT, which first began its development in 20101 and includes locations throughout El Dorado, AR, Ruston, LA, Draper, UT, Heber City, UT, Park City, UT, Salt Lake City, UT, Provo, UT and Hailey, ID. The Karl Malone Auto Group offers brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Lincoln and unlimited powersport brands like Honda and Can-Am. With dealer specials and incentives and in-store financing, Karl Malone made it his mission to create a business model that not only helped his customers and community find it easy to purchase a car, but he also provided employment opportunities to local residents.
Karl Malone’s long-time trusted partner and auto enterprise manager, Andy Madsen, recalled a time when Karl Malone visited one of his many dealerships, saying, "Our guys enjoy it when Karl comes to town. We call him Disneyland Dad. He's out there having fun and doing nice things for our employees. He talks to them about their families and their lives and helps them with things. One Christmas Eve he showed up and gave $500 to everyone in our group. He goes in the back and visits with the techs. He goes out and closes deals with customers. He has fun."1
